FIELD WORKS

Field Works bring together local and international artists and other specialists from specific disciplines (urban historians, oceanographers, philosophers, curators, critics, sociologists, fashion and industrial designers, landscape architects,…) who share similar affinities, are engaged in similar topics, but approach them from different angles. Each of the five Field Works is built on specific neuralgic local (yet universally relevant) issues such as the wild urbanization of the city and its lost memory, water (with special focus on the cultivation and preservation of the Bay of Izmir and its invisible space within society), biodiversity and its challenges and setbacks, changes in the environment, as well as the shifts in thought as regards the prevailing model of neoliberal production and consumption and its growing opposition in sustainable food systems and design, urban agriculture. One of them(Studio as a School) was developed as an alternative course for art students, which tests the different learning models that shift the traditional hierarchical structure and create a platform for emancipatory student participation in the process while experimenting between theory and practice in contemporary art.

Field Works were created in order to show how strategies and tactics that artists develop within their practices can represent a valuable contribution to a change in thought and lead to changes in the prevailing general modus operandi. We are especially interested in generating synergy from two seemingly diametrically opposed work procedures: scientific methodology based on specialization versus artistic methodology based on the principle of bricolage. Artists, who often work as bricoleurs, manage to solve various tasks and problems mainly because they are not specialists, but are resourceful when using the different tools they find, often applying them without knowing or even caring for the instructions on how to use them. Sometimes they manage to reach incredible solutions that are only possible when people think outside the box. When this approach is joined by its counterpart (specialized scientific modus operandi on the emancipatory level), it is capable of creating genuine interdisciplinary collaboration and opening different perspectives in the reading of the ordinary, the usual.

Each of the Field Works has its own tailor made work process, a public program and structure composed of debates, exhibitions, interventions, archives, walks…and diverse time spans. Some have been active in researching and working together already since the beginning of 2013, while others just started to work together in the autumn of the same year. The various public appearances of Field Works will be scattered between November 2013 and March 2014, when all the diverse segments will be put together in an attempt to visualize the process. This part of the process will take place as Archive Visualized: a special archive exhibition. The exhibition will bring together all five Field Works in a single space, with which it will attempt to present the complexity of the various strategies, tactics and formats that the participants used in their work. This will be performed with the aid of audio and video documentation, finished and unfinished works/products, books, artworks, videos – anything that can help visualize the working process, i.e. visualize the process as well as the ephemeral.
